Pringles Recall: First Cancer & Now Salmonella?

Pringles Chips RecalledSnowballing from the 26 recalls already issued on foods containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), Pringles is the latest to issue an immediate recall. Used as a popular flavour enhancer, the HVP is believed to have been contaminated with salmonella.

Two Pringle flavours have been recalled, Family Faves Taco Night and Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger.

Salmonella and Hydrolyzed vegetable protein

To date, the salmonella food recalls have been linked to processed foods. The most popular being:

  • Potato and corn chips
  • Canned and boxed soups
  • Popcorn

Due to the ready-to-eat nature of these food items, they are generally not required to be re-cooked, and in the case of soups just reheated. This unfortunately is not sufficient in killing off salmonella bacteria.

Not the first time, remember the Pringles cancer scare?

Back in 2008, the Pringles potato chips line was blacklisted in China due to the discovery of a banned carcinogen called potassium bromate. Two batches were tested at the start of the year and found positive to containing the cancer causing chemical.
