The Perricone Diet was created by renowned dermatologist and expert on nutrition, Nicholas Perricone, creator of a line of beauty products that also bears his name and author of several bestsellers including The Cure for Wrinkles (The Wrinkle Cure), and Recipe of Perricone (The Perricone Prescription).
Dr. Perricone said that his advice and beauty products are based on science and serious study, not on "the diet of fashion".
Perricone is considered the Father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging. This scheme proposes a revolutionary anti-aging program which sustains a healthy diet and in addition to helping lose weight, helps maintain good health, youth and beauty.
Dr. Perricone provides 10 food groups that a healthy diet should include, in addition to healthy sources of protein:
- Omega 3 comes from salmon, tuna, sardines, eggs, and flaxseed among others.
- Fruits rich in fibre include fruits like apples and grapefruits.
- Fat fruits: such as olives and avocados.
- Spices: help combat micro-inflammation in the body and maintain stable blood sugar levels.
- Chili: suppresses appetite, accelerate metabolism and fights inflammation in the body.
- Nuts and seeds: They are rich in protein and good fats. Sesame, flaxseed, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and ayote (pumpkin) among others are recommended.
- Lentils and beans: They are rich in fibre, antioxidants and proteins. They help burn fat and control blood sugar levels.
- Probiotic products such as yogurt and the likes are rich in calcium and protein but low in fat and cholesterol.
- Whole Grains: the traditional oats and barley. They are nutritious and gives a feeling of fullness, keeping blood sugar levels stable and helps lower cholesterol.
- Vegetables: spinach and other leafy greens, cabbage, broccoli and culinary herbs. They have vitamins and fibre and are low in calories.
In a nutshell, that's a typical Perricone diet. As always, consult your doctor before taking on strict diet regimes such as this.
