As the Toyota Prius hybrid is already under investigation over complaints of slipping brakes, another revealing statement comes from Toyota stating that it had previously conducted a software fix to solve the problem without informing the customers of the change. The company admits to be unsure of how to handle a large number of already-delivered Prius cars without a proper software fix being made.
Last year right after the sales of the third-generation Prius in the US, Japan and Europe, the problem started attracting public attention. Several complaints of unintended acceleration happening on bumpy roads, had been registered since then to the Transportation agencies in the US and Japan.
Japan's Ministry of Transportation has already ordered the company to investigate the problem and to recall if required.
The ministry has received 38 complaints since July. Meanwhile, 102 complaints related to brakes have been submitted at the official website of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
While meeting with the press, Hiroyuki Yokoyama, Toyota's Managing Officer, explained that the slipping feeling is due to a lag time in the shift between the car;s regenerative braking system and the anti-lock braking system.
