General Motors has confirmed that Magna will begin production of a soft top for the Camaro convertible at its Kentucky plant starting next month.
The soft top, made with fabrics sourced from Magna's Mexican operation, will be utilized in the 20,000 Camaro convertibles GM plans to produce on the first year of launching. This makes it one of the biggest soft top contracts in the United States, just above that of the Ford Mustang.
Last year, we saw General Motors axe production of several convertible models, including the Cadillac XLR, Saturn Sky and the Pontiac Solstice, due to being on the brink of bankruptcy. With GM receiving $550 million for selling Saab off to Spyker, it appears that they may begin giving the greenlight on new models and side projects.
Expect the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible to hit dealerships by the 2nd quarter of 2011.
