2009 VW PoloVolkswagen introduced the fifth generation of the Polo series, a 4-door hatchback of aggressive dynamics, aesthetic styling with a bevy of high-end gadgets, and lighter but slightly larger in size than the earlier Polo.

This latest Polo hatchback is powered by three different TSi petrol engines of 1.2 litres, 1.3 litres and 1.4 litres and three types of TDi diesel engines of 1.6 litres of different capacities.

Sportier aesthetics

Although the new Polo exhibits a newly designed aesthetic style, many of the features of the car have already been incorporated in the new VW Gold and Scirocco variants.

The front of the Polo sports a new look with the usual VW logo emblazoned at the centre of the double slatted horizontal grill with flare away styled xenon headlights hugging the rounded left and right sides just above the broad bumper. Just below the broad bumper and just above the narrowed spoiler, jutting forward off the body line, you have a large honeycomb-design air intake with the fog lamp and turn indicator integrated as single units on either side. The getup of the front will certainly make your heart skip a beat.

Again looking at the profile you will find that the height has been lowered in comparison to the earlier Polo, and the flared wheel arches and that flow back designed lines, right up to the rear, together with the sweep-back windscreen and sloping fall-away roofline gives the car that simply-dynamic, remarkably sporty and youthful appeal.

High quality interior

The interior of the new Polo has also been changed and now has a higher quality and level of equipment much more complete with the new 'slush' technology.

The entire centre console has a distribution very similar to its predecessor but the quality of materials and finishes have been redefined considerably.

The instrument panel on the dashboard behind the steering wheel now has only two analog clocks. One is the speedometer and the other is the tachometer. The other indications are shown via a digital display that is located in the centre console. The usually light blue backlighting of the instrument panel of the Volkswagon has been redesigned and has been changed to white backlighting.

Engine versions

The new Polo is fitted, in the first year of launching, with a total of six engines, three petrol and three diesel variants. The three petrol engines are 1.2 litre 60 hp, another 1.2 litre 70 hp and 1.4 litre 85 hp versions, while the diesel TDI engines are all of 1600 CC capacity with horse powers of 75, 90 and 105.

Reduced consumption

All the different variants of the petrol and diesel engines fitted to the different models of the Volkswagon Polo have been redesigned and modified with time tested technical modifications to deliver maximum power but minimum torque. These engines being paired with the different variants of 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions or 7-speed (DSG) dual clutch transmission, the new Polo has been tested to perform with comparatively low fuel consumptions, which is sure to be welcome by the admirers of the this new Volkswagon.

Noteworthy among all the versions is the version with a 90-PS TDI diesel with Blue Motion package which consumed just 3.6 litres of diesel over 100 kilometres.

Blue Motion technology

Blue Motion is a technology combining Environmental engineering and Mechanical engineering that was innovatively designed by Volkswagon Engineers. It combines various elements like, aerodynamics, weight, drive train engineering and engine management. It greatly helps to bring down the fuel consumption. This Green technology is being incorporated in almost all the diesel vehicles produced by Volkswagon.

The Volkswagon 2009 Polo is being offered in three trims as well, from base to luxury.

Among the new enhancements in the new Polo, you have the standard airbags (front, side and rear), belt tensionsers, seat belt warning indicators, child seat protection, electronic stabilization programme (ESP) with incline stop/start control and most of the normal complements found in other vehicles.

The new Polo will be launched in Australia at the start of 2010. The Polo should be able to impact the Australian audience with its new design and fuel efficient Blue Motion engines.
