The Android Market is growing at such a fast pace that its difficult to keep up with what's new and worthy of download. To recap this year's best Android apps so far, here is our list of the top 5 apps that should find a place on your Android phone.
Layar
Layar is a little difficult to classify but is basically one of the nicest augmented reality apps out for Androids at the moment. It uses your GPS, compass and camera to give information and suggestions on your surrounding environment. It puts live markers straight up on what your camera is pointing at. Furthermore, it even has a search feature in case you are in a new neighborhood and fancy a 'frapuccino'.
Chomp SMS
This basically changes your SMS UI (skin) to mimic that of the iPhone. Now of course we are not saying that the iPhone SMS interface is better than an Android's but it sure is cleaner. Give it a go, it's free.
Meebo IM
The Meebo IM app is an all-in-one chat messenger solution for Google Talk, Yahoo and MSN messenger, AOL and Facebook Chat. While multi-tasking is possible on your Android, it's not smart to open all these separate apps simultaneously as you will find your phone sluggish and more prone to crash. Meebo takes care of this by packing them all into one simple, lightweight app. Thanks Meebo.
Advanced Task Killer
Multitasking, how did we ever live without it?. Unfortunately it sometimes can become a memory hog and make the device non-responsive in such situations. In comes Advanced Task Killer which behaves similar to the Task Manager on a PC. You can shut down individual apps that are running in the background without having to reboot your device. Additionally, you can also free up your internal memory and rearrange files (similar to defragmenting). This is a must-have utility for Android power-users.
Google Sky Maps
This Android app makes the list based on awesomeness alone. Using GPS, you get to point your handset in any direction at the sky and it tells you every single constellation in that region. While it may not sound impressive, it needs to be seen to be appreciated.
There you have it, the top 5 Android apps of 2010, so far.
