Google is not bounded by any business limits, but from the Internet to an energy supplier?
Google formed a subsidiary called Google Energy in December and the only purpose of this company was to buy and sell electricity in bulk. To fulfill this purpose, they put in an application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to buy and sell electricity at market rates. Their application has been approved and they have started building low cost mirrors for use in solar panels.
They also have a Google PowerMeter which lets users record their electricity usage if they have the required equipment to upload the data. All this is done to gain control over elevated energy costs of their data centres, and for the greenhouse effect.
Everyone was expecting Google to enter the energy business sooner or later. Google will most probably sell electricity directly to consumers or will go into partnership with existing utility companies.
